A 21st Century Classroom?
As society and the nature of information change, our schools will be faced with change also. What will a 21st century classroom look like?
Welcome to the on-line discussion blog for ED 4862 - Technology in Education II. This blog will provide a forum for an on-going conversation of topics in technology in education during the course of the study.

I think that the 21st century classroom will look very much like the classrooms we have today at our school right now, with just a little more technology than anything else, with access to webblogs, and websites, and more technology to make the learning experience a lot more interactive with communities all over the place. Right now, we have the videoconference, the smart boards, the software, the computers.. etc..
There will still be a necessary need to have the old ways of teaching such as a hands on teacher with hands on material to allow for learning by all individuals since we all have different styles, but it will allow for connections between all people, all over the world. It's a step to improved learning, but all the time with new advancements, new tools, it is a question of when more improvements will render the one just moments ago obselete.
I think that 21st century will be the same as it is now, just a little more advance with technology. I believe that we should still use text books to teach in classrooms. Maybe use more technology in blogs and websites, wikis...etc. The children need to interact with other children to learn together.
Gail said: I am really overwhelmed by what is happening with society with the changes that technology is bringing about. Everything is moving too fast without any regard to long-term results (there is no time for this!) It is sad that we have to be swept along helplessly. I hope our society gets a chance to evaluate what is going on and design the 21st century classroom with careful planning, thought, and in a manner that won't be harmful for our children. I can't even begin to imagine (perhaps I lack imagination!) what kinds of changes will occur. But the technology seems to be propelling the direction that education is taking and will probably define what this century's classroom will look like. Whether we have any input remains into this process remains to be seen!
I think the 21st century classroom will look like it looks now. It also depends how you want it to look like. If you, as a teacher, want to do away with all the books, and to just rely on computers and technology, then the classroom will look pretty empty. Personally, I'd like to have text books handy, and to use them as references. I think that we'll always use textbooks, and computers will play second fiddle to textbooks. I know thats wishful thinking, seeing how technology is the wave of the future. I hope that textbooks will never fade away.

I think that our classrooms in the near future are going to be far from the ways that we have all known classrooms to be like in the past. I can see already the move from traditional chalk boards to the more modern smartboards. Not all classroom have them yet, but soon will. for the last three years, my daughter never failed to bring home a note asking me to please indicate if we owned a home computer. This in it's self goes to show that schools are beginning to almost recommend that we have one in order for our children to receive optimal education. I can see students not having to bring home a big bag of books and scribblers, but instead be required to go on line to complete homework. I mean, this may not be what most of us want but, lets face it, it is on it's way as we speak/read. We are often asked if we agree, but does it really matter. We basicly have no control over what technology our schools adopt. We just have to basicly jump on the band wagon and follow the trends in order to pass our districts personal development portfolios.
With the way technology seems to have taken on such importance in today's schools I can imagine a futuristic classroom that is purely technology based, as this class is. Students will no longer have to get up and catch the bus to school, they'll just have to roll over and turn on their computers much like the way many people now work out of their homes. Parents will have to take on the role of teacher and teachers will only be there as guides. The idea of technology taking over classrooms scares me, I want my child to be well rounded, mentally not physically, lol. Anyway I'm just imagining the future classroom the way it seems to be heading. I actually do agree that there are benifits to technology being part of the everyday classroom but that there should be limits because we are after all human beings that need a wide range of experiences that engage all the senses, not just our visual and tactile senses.
Right now our local high school has smartboards in every class room which is big change from chalk and blackboard. Every student in the richibucto middle is assigned a laptop for the entire school year. It's amazing how technology has been integrated into our schools systems and how our children are being taught. As more of these powerful teaching tools are being the used the more we find ourselves eager to learn more. Honestlty i have no idea of what the future holds regarding technology. I can only imagine that it will be so advanced and fast moving that I wouldnt be able to keep up. Maybe in the future every classroom will have the video conferencing technology to communicate with other students around the world. Wow I just realized that text books might get extinct. Now thats just crazy but hey life goes on. I hope to adapt & apply the skills i have learned in this course in order to survive in the 21st century classroom.
What a question to try to answer especially when I just learned that there was that much technology out there in the first place. I see the many advantages that the students have access to with technology than what we grew up with in schools. I can not imagine what a classroom will look like in the future but I would still like to see a regular looking classroom for the Kindergarten children because children need to socialize and play. As I said before, reading to children is just as important and would like to see that in the future, but it would be so amazing to have Robert Munsch to actually read his stories through videoconferencing or blogging and to have the children actually talk to. For me. meeting Robert Munsch was already an experience and telling the children that I met him makes me feel proud that I did. Imagine the children’s faces if they could meet authors and storytellers. I too would like to learn more about blogging especially with my students. I have always told myself to live one day at a time and learn a new thing everyday, now it's like, don't take a rest because a lot is going to happen tomorrow with technology.
I could see my classroom with every students computer hooked up to the smartboard with no textbooks, just reading books and posters and smartboards on the walls. With the teachers computer able to check in on any one of her students computers simply by a click or two on her computer. Plus for extra security have all their computers facing in the center while my computer is in the center of all of their computers so that I can just glance around the room to see if they are where they are supposed to be. And all of the curriculum textbooks accessable through my wiki and the homework placed on the blog. I could see every student with a digital camera, video cam and all that stuff that is considered a luxury now.
My twenty first classroom would look amazing, Students walking in with 3-d glasses, lap top in their book bags. No pen or pencil required for writing information down. Just a post-it and pin point gadget that will do the job as good as pen or pencil. Student with Einstein hair do, black leather jacket with remote control zippers. My class room will be with several different countries, Where smart board are only need to teach class. I will be teaching out of my home. If I need to be somewhere all I have to do is jump in my auto pilot plane. Be there in matter of minutes to assist my students with their problems. This sound like the Jetson
I personally don't have a clue of what the 21st Century Classroom will look like but the only thing I know for sure. It won't be anything like it was when I was going to school and it won't be anything like it is now. It's probably going to be far more advanced. There will definitely be more usage of computer technologies. Each classroom will have their own smart board. Each child will probably own or have access to their own laptop to carry home each night instead of text book. Teleconferencing, wikis, blogs will be the only way of sharing information between teacher and student or the whole wide world for that matter. I don't know....
Who knows what will the 21st Century will bring us. The only thing I know for sure is that we better be prepared.
I believe that the atmosphere of the classroom of the 21st C. will be pretty much the same, during break time, kids will still be hanging out in the classroom or going out for recess, hopefully. There might be holographic books, and floating chairs and desks. Or there may simply be a lot more technological tools within the classroom, such as Smart Boards, tablets, gadgets for kids to use while they're doing their work. I believe all the kids will be connected by link with their teacher. I also think that perhaps international students may also have access to our classes daily, or may be able to take lessons with our classes, just via something even more valuable than videoconferencing.... teleportation or something :) But I do strongly believe that there is a great chance of schools becoming an international classroom and that there will be abilites for our kids to interact daily with kids from Japan, or China, or the farthest reaches of the World, with just the click of the mouse. And there will be more advanced computers. There will be all these neat things, perhaps children will be able to personalize their own computers by scanning their retinas, because fingerprints are almost the thing of the past, too easily broken into. The computers will have little gps systems to track their owners, so parents will know where their children are, simply by their computer or their sneakers, which is ALREADY invented now, so I think that is pretty cool!! You can buy $300.00 little children's sneakers with little gps systems in it. If I knew where to find them, I think i would purchase them. The classroom of the 21st century will also probably be equipped, mine will be for sure, with that neat Dance Mat, so children won't be just hooked on technology that you have to sit for, they'll have to get up and dance at halftime during lengthier classes. And I believe in the 21st century, I am hoping, that there will be a strong emphasis on healthy schools. That there will be solar roofs in the schools, classrooms will be more open to clean air, either circulated through by manmade machinery, which I hope not, because that will mean that the outside air is too polluted to breath in regularly. Or that people will become more environmentally conscious and help the oxygen level increase. I believe that these classrooms, as well as classrooms of today, should also have greenery growing live within them and have access to real live little critters within the classroom, to compliment all the other non-living articles within. Children still need to know what it's like to own a pet, to have a little classroom mascot. It's still an important part of school. Thank you, Melissa
I don't know what my future class would look like, but sure hope I have all the technologies that are necessary for me to be the best Teacher that I can be. I realize that our technology is changing each and everyday. So I would have to educate myself big time. I have to admit that this is a hard question to answer. As I would not want to sound conceided and or greedy. I would wish for whatever that is available and It wouldn't surprise me that it is going to be overwhelming. Laptops for each student. Smartboards everywhere. I know one thing I sure hope books are not extinct that would be a shame. I tell you something technology is changing so fast that you have to be faster.
Nicole S.,
I don't think the 21st century classroom will look any different than it does today. I think the only differences we will see are that the chalk board may be replaced by smartboards and students will be doing homework online and using the computer a lot more in the classroom.
Well, in my opinion, I do think that there will be done away with the black or green boards. Teachers probably won,t have anymore chalkboard hands; which would be great. It wouldn,t surprise me if every child would have some sort of lap top with them , which would probably be owned by the school, so that even low income families would have access to the technology as other higher income families could afford a sort of computer at home. Maybe even the word, "computer" would be changed to something else. I also do believe that children will have more hands on work, working with technology & that the students would collaborate more than now, but I also do think that there would be more discussions with other people through technology. Another thing would be that there would be less paper work, but not completely elininated, maybe penmanship would be a selective rather than a compulsary. Prbably textbooks would be more obsolete because a teacher may be able to get access info more easily through technological advances, instead of ordering so many heavy books. Lastly I think they will do away with singular desks because students would be collaborating more than ever, bigger tables would be put in their place, so thae students can easily share their ideas and knowledge.

Well as time goes on I think that schools are getting to be more up to date.....and classrooms are beginning not to have things in there when I was going to school. Teachers are doing away with chalkboards and using whiteboards now.....more computers are being added to classrooms. So with the coming of the 21st century there will probably be many more changes....such as children using laptops in school, referring to the internet for notes and readings for school. I think there will be very little done except for a few subjects like math and writing but beside that everything else can be done on a computer. I think many more schools will be interacting via video-conferencing and taking classes together and working together on many things. But as time goes on things will change in the classrooms but I think they will change as much as some people think but we will see as we get there.
The 21st Century Classroom will be filled with lots of technological equipment, hopefully if the resources are there, but I don’t think that technology is the main issue, it will be HOW we use that technology that will change the 21st century classroom. Children are already using technology today and they use it mostly for social purposes. Teachers must be prepared to embrace technology and have the ability to mentor or guide students to use it in an effective and appropriate way. I can see children interacting collaboratively with their classmates as well as other students, teachers, authors, ect. in the future. Students will be more literate then their parents, and possibly their teachers when it comes to technology. Students will be more motivated about their work, and want to share with other people their ideas and thoughts. Students will not only be able to read and write but they will be able to apply their reading and writing in new ways that may encourage them to write more. Isn’t this what we all want as teachers?
In the 21st century, I think classrooms will be somewhat different. The whiteboards that once replaced chalkboards, will be replaced by smartboards. There will be more computers crowding our work areas instead of piles of books and papers.I believe assignments and homework will be done on computers also. With the way the world and technology is changing,in no time classrooms will be different.
It feels i am on a roller coaster trying to take in what i can in this fast moving technology. Classroom will have walls but i do not think we will be able to look at faces as often as we do. we will see head popping up every once in awhile. This means that in 10 years most of the student will have computers at schools and at homes faces just stuck in computer. Even now there are lots of our kids in highschool taking on line couses from their homes.
I think that the class rooms will be normal but i think that they will have just on line courses for the students. because right now there are alot of stuff being replaced. there use to be a black board and now there is a smart board. and maybe next time there will be something eles. i think that schools in the 21st century will be cooler and better then they are now.
my classroom would have the top of the line computers for each of my students. Eveyone would have their own wiki and we would have a class blog. The one thing I would make sure to keep form the past is one-on-one time with the students. Reading would still aloud and no one would be on the computer at this time. I strongly belive students need to use their emaginations so there would also be quite reading time. Everything else would take place through the computer.
my 21st century classroom would look like a computer lab with the top of the line computers on every child's desk. we will be equipped with all the updated technology like white boards, projectors, etc. we will be using wiki's in our class, along with blogging.i can see each students interacting with real people across the world by reading and writing, and learning from each other.
I think the 21st century classroom will look like the classrooms we have today. But there will be more advance technology that educators will be using in the classrooms, such as wikis, blogs, websites, and teleconferencing. Sharing information between teacher and student.I would like to see our schools have laptops for each student. There would be no more paper work for the teacher to do,just click and there is your students work.Thats what I would like to see that in the future in my classroom in the 21st century.I just hope that they won't make books extinct. The teachers need to interact with the students.
I can see the 21st century classroom as more of a room filled with various technological tools that resemble a multi-media room.
Different sections of the classroom will have different stations where the teacher and student can create and participate in.
I see a section of the classroom where it would be a place to create podcasts, where students can update the school on the weather, give interviews, report information about the school's activities of the day.
I see a Blog Wall of fame, that highlights and notes any work that has been recognized on a global scale.
I see a video station where the kids can create videos about a school trip or a summer vacation.
Digital cameras so the student can work on their own personal portfolios.
I see students working on virtaul exercises like dissecting a frog, or some scince project that involves chemicals.
I can see students being involved in their own learning by creating projects that they will be working on throughout the year, and constantly updating it or making improvements as they see fit.
I can see colour coded push pins on a global map showing what each pin represents in what part of the world are these children interacting and learning from each other.
And finally I can see a section where there is a comfortable cushioned chair with books set up for the student to rest and get away from the computer for a while...to enjoy a good book, write their thoughts down on a piece of paper, or work on some sort of creative art project.
Our schools will indead have to change with the times. It is important to keep our students on track and allow them the opportunities that other children will have. I predict that classrooms will soon change with the absence of texts and the one on one lap top method. Computer technology will be the future and we must teach our children.
I really can't imagine how the future classroom would look like or how they would run because I just don't want to fathom everything being technological. If I would imagine or try to picture this happening, I would really be scared. No doubt that text books and such will no longer be used but I would still like to use them as I like to read.
The 21st century classroom will be quite different than today's classrooms. There
will be less teacher interaction and students will be learning mostly through computers. Less teachers will be needed since class sizes will increase because students will be teaching themselves via computers. Also, there will be no more snow days because classes will still be conducted on-line... lol
The 21 century classroom, wouldn't be not much of a difference, although all students will have thier own laptops to use, everyclass room with smart boards. Kids will still be taught by a teacher, right there in the room, and have books to read. They will still have their recess and lunch, and just hang out with thier friends. No more photos copying or note handouts, everything will be posted on the classroom blog. Parents will be more involved through the blog site, There will be more tech support on hand, Faster computer, faster internet and more servers! Teachers will be less stressed out, and have more time to spend with thier families! BUT Ten, years from now, i dont think would make that much of a BIG difference, but you never know!!!!
Really just I don't know what classroom will look like. BUT I would like my classroom to be environmently clean, and loaded with high tech technology!! Hopefully we will still have books and textbook in our classrooms. I have to believe that I can become one of those teachers who is willing to go with the flow and I have to believe that we will have support from a good technology teacher. From what I have read the students will be leading the way, for us immigrants. Learning not just happening within the classroom but all over the world with other students. Just look back what changes have occured since we were in high school! We survived, and we will survive these changes!! Hopefully our children will not be in physio-thearpy due carpo-tunnel problem or having problems due to too much technology. Keep this in mind.
The wind may blow from any direction, but the direction in which you go depends on how you set your sails. Today let me set my sails in the direction I want to go and tend the sails so they stay on course.
I think eventually there will be computers for every student on each students desk. probably computerized cafateria menus. Communications from classroom to classroom will be visual. Just some overexagerated ideas? maybe
The 21st Century classroom will look like a regular classroom, but with modern technology to use. More web 2.0 usage, just about more new gadgets that replace today's (yesterday's) tools, such as paper, books, chalkboards, digital cameras, etc. And of course the 21st century classroom for adults will take place in homes, there won't be a need for classrooms. Just a computer and highspeed and maybe a webcam.
Maybe this 21st century classroom will be better for globalization as emails are taking over for paper. And maybe if every child has there own computer, they won't have to take notes on paper, because they would aready have notes on the wiki pages.
I think the future classrooms will be set more in on a technology bases. I think back to what my classrooms were like when I was in school(which wasnt very long ago!) there has been a huge increase in technology in the school systems. One thing I thought we'd have is our own laptops by the time we were in highschool but that still hasnt happened. So.. within the years to come, im sure all students will have their own laptops... Teachers will be more involved and understanding how tech. works... and incorperating the use of laptops/www. into their lessons. Textbooks.. well theyll probably still be around for sometime but probably wont use them as much. I cant wait for schools to be "high tech"... itll be interesting to see the new gadgets..especially by Smart Tech.
